Well this just may push me to install 6.0 on my machine. I have been wanting to look into it either way. I will let you know what happens.

The support for 132x25 modes in FreeBSD kernel versions before the changes introduced by Xin Li this summer (to the syscons driver) was more or less dependent on what type of video adapter you have. It used to work fine in Nvidia cards, but fail constantly on ATIs, etc.

CURRENT now has better support for video modes in the console, and it will also be a part of 6.0-RELEASE when that comes out. I've been running CURRENT on my workstation at home for so long I keep forgetting that not everyone has the same features by default... sorry about the confusion :)

I have tried to use the 132x25 modes before. They are listed as supported when I list the modes. However they never take? Any tips?

The VESA modes tend to a bit sluggish when compared with the plain text modes. I've tried to switch to VESA_800x600 as my default mode several times, but always kept rolling back my rc.conf to use 132x25 as the console mode.

X11 does a much better job of providing a good, fast, wide resolution like 1152x864 here, whenever I have the need for a GUI. At home, I still spend most of my time on text-only console vtys with the 132x25 mode as my default.
